Pandemic evictions
Since Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on March 4th, there have been at least 1,609 evictions across the state, including 501 after the shelter-in-place order on March 19th, according to documents obtained from county sheriffs. Out of all 58 counties CalMatters requested data from, 44 provided documents and data, which includes around 63% of the state population.
Each house below represents an eviction that occurred since Newsom declared a state of emergency. Evictions often involved multiple people at a residence.
